Awful news. The pilot was killed on impact and 2 workers at the farm it crashed into were injured. Unofficial word is that it was the de Havilland Venom from World Heritage Air Museum in Detroit. The number of airworthy Venoms is in the single digits.

That’s awful news. May the pilot rest in peace, and prayers for the injured farmers.

I know it’s cliche when people say, ‘they went doing what they enjoyed’ , but people don’t fly these old birds unless it’s in their blood, their mind and their heart.
Rest in peace mate and a speedy recovery to the injured.

I think the rate of warbird crashes will increase over time. These are becoming ruinously expensive to fly, and the ability to fly and maintain the aircraft is a good reward for donors. The population with the cash to donate and the skills to fly and maintain these aircraft is shrinking.

I believe that’s called the Jack Roush Effect.

A tad drunk but, you're one of my favorite Opponauts. Funny, genuine, and always honest. And you constantly make me feel like scum for but cleaning my own car.

If it makes you feel any better, Jerry Conley owns two Vamps and regularly flies them at shows around the Americas.

They should publish what days he is flying in and out of Oshkosh so I can avoid those days

The Vampire and Venom were both scheduled to be in Oshkosh next week, along with a Gloster Meteor, I think at least 2 Spits, and others as part of a celebration of British warbirds.
Needless to say, this casts a pall over all of that.

I know the feel. One of the racers at an event I was shooting had a fatal mechanical failure and the whole paddock was in grief the rest of the weekend.

That’s sad. What was supposed to be a fun event gets turned upside down.
Airventure is enormous, but I presume the Venom was going to be on the main square, and I expect the EAA to have an appropriate memorial.

RIP. Keeping these war birds in usable shape is a formidable mission.
